NHM MizoramØ Goal: Through this programme, terminally ill cancer patients are getting pain relief and other supportive care.
Availability & Accessibility of rational, quality pain relief & palliative care to the needy as an integral part of health care at all levels in alignment with community requirement
Ø Status: NPPC is a National Programme, implemented in Mizoram since October 2016 and currently covered eight (9) districts – Aizawl East, Aizawl West, Champhai, Kolasib, Mamit, Lawngtlai, Lunglei, Serchhip & Siaha. State Palliative Care Cell is also established at Directorate of Hospital & Medical Education.
Three services are provided under NPPC.
1) OPD Services: Palliative Care OPD is running in all 8 District Hospitals as mentioned above.
2) IPD Services: 10 Bedded Palliative Ward at MSCI, Zemabawk and 4 Bedded Palliative Ward at Lunglei District Hospital available. Only 2 Districts – Aizawl East (MSCI) & District Hospital Lunglei have dedicated Palliative Care ward.
Although other Districts do not have dedicated ward, there are 2 male & 2 female bed in Medicine Ward allotted for Palliative Care patients.
3) Home Based Care Services: Palliative Care Team that includes Doctors & Nurses give supportive care and psycological and moral support for bed ridden cancer patients and the affected family.
Home Based Care is carried out in all 9 Districts by Palliative Care Team comprising of Medicine Specialist/Radiation Oncologist/Medical Officer and Staff Nurse. Usually, each team allot 1 specific day/week which is convenient to them for their visit.
Home Based Care Kit is procured and distributed free of cost to patients according to their need. The Kit consist of –

4) Cotton wool absorbent 500 g roll
5) Adhesive Plaster 2.5 cm spool
6) Foley's Catheter 14F, 16F
7) Ryles Tube 14 F, 16 F
8) I.V Set
9) Disposable Syringe with needle 2cc, 5cc, 10 cc, 20 cc
10) 3 Way Cannula
11) Inj. NS 0.9% 100 ml
12) InjMetrogyl 100 ml
13) Betadine Solution 100 ml
14) Spirit Solution 100 ml
15) Xylocaine Jelly
16) Needle 18 G
17) Venflon 24 G
